When the Greater Miami Athletic Conference (GMAC) came up with the idea to have a week dedicated to its own member schools some years back, it was met with plenty of resistance.
With Miami-Dade County teams already playing a competitive schedule, it was thought that adding another game against a non-district opponent would only lower the losing teams in the state rankings as well as the national picture.
When Miami Northwestern and Miami Palmetto played on Friday night, it was a game where the Bulls started slow and ended up flexing their muscle, winning 28-0.
ROCKETS OUTLAST SPARTANS
In the “title” game on Saturday evening, unbeaten Miami Southridge (8-1) roared out to a 20-0 lead, only to watch Miami Central (7-1) come back and in the endzone, come away with a 34-28 win.
The Rockets, who were ineligible to play for a state title last season had to watch Northwestern cruise to a 3A state title – and that didn’t sit well.
After a coaching change in the off-season, bringing back Derrick Gibson, and the graduation of several student/athletes, Miami Central was the underdog, and despite losing to Northwestern earlier in the season, they ended up in the championship game and made the most of it against a Spartans squad that was more than up for the challenge.
Veteran head coach Pierre Senatus and his team, despite losing on Saturday night, put defending 6A state champion West Boca Raton and other programs across the state on serious notice that the title will definitely go through Miami Southridge this season.
CENTRAL KNOWS HOW TO WIN
There is no getting around the fact that the Rockets have been able to meet all challenges this season, and Saturday night certainly showed that you better bring it for 48 minutes if you are going to walk away with a “W” like Northwestern did earlier this month.
