The first week of the state football playoffs only set the table for what lies ahead here in south Florida.
With some teams having easy openers – others were faced with major challenges and truly pulled off surprises.
While winning in the opening round is always huge for any program, it’s a victory here in the region semifinals that gives these teams plenty of credibility.
Here is a look at the second week of the state playoffs for teams in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties:
1.Miami Central (2M, 10-0). THIS WEEK: No. 4 seed Miami Northwestern (6-4.) NEXT GAME: The winner of No. 3 Miami Norland and No. 2 Miami Booker T. Washington (9-2). LAST WEEK: The Rockets crushed No. 8 seed Miami St. Brendan 60-0.
2. Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna (1M, 8-0). THIS WEEK: No. 4 seed Hollywood Avant Garde in the opening round of the state playoffs. NEXT WEEK: The winner of the No. 3 North Palm Beach Benjamin (5-4) and No. 2 West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman (10-0). LAST WEEK: The Lions were off during the first week.
3. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (3M, 11-0). THIS WEEK: The Raiders will play host to No. 4 Delray Beach Atlantic. NEXT GAME: The winner of the No. 3 Pompano Beach Blanche Ely (10-0) and No. 2 Fort Lauderdale Dillard (7-4) contest. LAST WEEK: The Raiders opened the state playoffs with a 59-14 win against No. 8 Coconut Creek.
4. Plantation American Heritage (2M, 9-1). THIS WEEK: No. 4 Boynton Beach (9-2) at home. NEXT GAME: The winner of the No. 3 Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian (8-2) and No. 2 Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons (10-1). LAST WEEK: The Patriots continued to roll with a 43-7 win against Riviera Beach Inlet Grove.
5. Miami Christopher Columbus (4M, 10-1). THIS WEEK: A rematch with area rival No. 4 Miami Palmetto (6-5). NEXT GAME: The winner of No. 3 Doral Academy (7-4) and No. 2 Davie Western (7-3). LAST WEEK: The Explorers beat No. 8 Miami High, 63-0.
6. Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons (2M, 10-1). THIS WEEK: A home game rematch against No. 3 Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian (8-2). NEXT GAME: LAST WEEK: The two-time defending state champions opened the state playoffs with a 45-0 win against No. 7 Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest.
7. Miramar (3M, 9-1). THIS WEEK: A home game against No. 3 Miami Southridge. NEXT GAME: The winner will play either No. 5 Miami Dr. Krop (7-4) or No. 1 Homestead (8-2). LAST WEEK: The Patriots came up with another shutout in beating Pembroke Pines Charter for the second time this season, 48-0.
8. Pompano Beach Blanche Ely (3M, 10-0). THIS WEEK: The rematch of the Broward “Soul Bowl” against No. 2 seed Fort Lauderdale Dillard. NEXT GAME: The winner will get either No. 4 Delray Beach Atlantic (8-3) or No. 1 Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (10-0). LAST WEEK: The Tigers had to wait to Monday to remain unbeaten with a 28-0 win against Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer.
9. Miami Booker T. Washington (2M, 9-2). THIS WEEK: A game against No. 3 Miami Norland for the second time this year. NEXT GAME: The winner will play either No 4 Miami Northwestern (6-4) or No. 1 Miami Central (10-0). LAST WEEK: The Tornadoes rolled to a 27-13 win against Miami Carol City.
10. Miami Norland (2M, 8-2). THIS WEEK: A road game against No. 3 Miami Norland. NEXT GAME: The winner will get either No 4 Miami Northwestern (6-4) or No. 1 Miami Central (10-0). LAST WEEK: The Vikings took care of No. 6 Miami Jackson, 37-6.
11. Homestead (3M, 8-2). THIS WEEK: A home game against No. 5 Miami Dr. Krop. NEXT GAME: The winner will take on the winner of No. 3 Miami Southridge (7-4) and No. 2 Miramar (9-1). LAST WEEK: The Broncos scored early and often in a 40-0 win against No. 8 seed North Miami.
12. Coconut Creek Monarch (4M, 9-2). THIS WEEK: The No. 2 Knights will have a home game against No. 3 Palm Beach Gardens (8-3). NEXT GAME: The winner will get either No. 5 Parkland Douglas (8-3) or No. 1 Wellington Palm Beach Central (10-1). LAST WEEK: A convincing Monday night win against Boca Raton, 56-21.
13. Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian (2M, 8-2). THIS WEEK: For the second time this season, they will play at No. 2 Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons. NEXT GAME: The winner gets either No. 4 Boynton Beach (9-2) at No. 1 Plantation American Heritage (10-1). LAST WEEK: The Eagles earned a 49-34 state quarterfinal win over Boca Raton St. Andrew’s.
14. Davie Western (4M, 7-3). THIS WEEK: A home game against No. 3 seed Doral Academy. NEXT GAME: The winner gets either No. 4 Miami Palmetto (6-5) or No. 1 Miami Christopher Columbus (10-1). LAST WEEK: The Wildcats opened the state playoffs with a convincing 38-17 win against No. 7 Weston Cypress Bay.
15. Miami Northwestern (2M, 6-4). THIS WEEK: The No. 4 seed will be at home against No. 5 Miami Gulliver Prep at Traz Powell Stadium Saturday at 6:00. NEXT GAME: The winner will either have No. 3 Miami Norland (8-2) or No. 2 Miami Booker T. Washington (9-2). LAST WEEK: The Bulls took care of No. 5 seed Miami Gulliver Prep, 39-0.
16. Fort Lauderdale Dillard (3M – 6-4). THIS WEEK: It’s a rematch of the Broward “Soul Bowl” against No. 3 Pompano Beach Blanche Ely (10-0). NEXT GAME: The winner gets either No. 4 Delray Beach Atlantic (8-3) at No. 1 Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (10-0). LAST WEEK: The Panthers got by No. 7 Fort Lauderdale for the second time this year, 45-20.
17. Parkland Douglas (8-3, 4M). THIS WEEK: As a No. 5 seed, the Eagles will be on the road once again at No. 1 Palm Beach Central (10-1). NEXT GAME: The winner will get either No. 3 Palm Beach Gardens (8-3) at No. 2 Coconut Creek Monarch (9-2). LAST WEEK: Won a thrilling 48-44 game on Monday night at Lantana Santaluces.
18. Hollywood Avant Garde (1M, 6-3). THIS WEEK: The No. 4 Sharks get another shot at No. 1 Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna on Friday. NEXT WEEK: The winner gets either No. 3 North Palm Beach Benjamin (5-4) or No. 2 Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Newman (10-0). LAST WEEK: They were off for the first round of the state playoffs.
19. Miami Palmetto (4M, 6-5). THIS WEEK: A rematch with top-seed Miami Christopher Columbus (10-1). NEXT WEEK: The winner gets either No. 3 Doral Academy (7-4) or No. 2 Davie Western (7-3). LAST WEEK: The Panthers took care of No. 5 seed Pembroke Pines West Broward, 37-13.
20. (TIE) Doral Academy (4M, 7-4). THIS WEEK: A road game at No. 2 Davie Western (7-3). NEXT WEEK: The winner gets either No. 4 Miami Palmetto (6-5) or No. 1 Miami Christopher Columbus (10-1). LAST WEEK: The Firebirds opened with a 50-25 win against No. 6 Pembroke Pines Somerset Academy.
Miami Southridge (3M, 7-4). THIS WEEK: The Spartans will have a road game against No. 2 seed Miramar (9-1). NEXT WEEK: The winner gets either No. 5 Miami Dr. Krop (7-4) or No. Homestead (8-2). LAST WEEK: A big home win against No. 6 Hollywood South Broward in the opening round, 20-14.
Miami Dr. Krop (3M, 7-4). THIS WEEK: The Lightning travel to play No. 1 seed Homestead (8-2). NEXT WEEK: The winner gets either No. 3 Miami Southridge (7-4) or No. 2 Miramar (9-1). LAST WEEK: Winning a playoff game for the first time in over a decade, they beat No. 4 Miami Belen Jesuit, 23-17.
Miami Archbishop Carroll (1M, 8-2). THIS WEEK: A home game against No. 4 Miami Palmer Trinity. NEXT WEEK: Will get either No. 2 Miami Westminster Christian (6-2) or No. 3 Miami True North (7-3). LAST WEEK: The Bulldogs were off for the opening round.
Miami Westminster Christian (1M, 6-2). THIS WEEK: Will have a matchup with No. 3 seed Miami True North Classical Academy (7-3). NEXT WEEK: The winner will get either No. 4 Miami Palmer Trinity (5-5) or No. 1 Miami Archbishop Carroll (8-2). LAST WEEK: The Warriors were off for the opening round.
Miami Palmer Trinity (1M, 5-5). THIS WEEK: An away game against the top seed Miami Archbishop Carroll (8-2). NEXT WEEK: The winner will have either No. 3 Miami True North (7-3) at No. 2 Miami Westminster Christian (6-2). LAST WEEK: The Falcons were off for the opening round.
Miami True North (1M, 7-3). THIS WEEK: A challenging game against No. 2 seed Miami Westminster Christian (6-2). NEXT WEEK: The winner of this contest gets either No. 4 Miami Palmer Trinity (5-5) or No. 1 Miami Archbishop Carroll (8-2). LAST WEEK: The Titans were off for the opening round.
