While some football programs in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties are still consumed with the newly formed “Open Division” – where eight programs, selected by a computer, will play for the “elite” state championships, 90 percent of the other programs are looking at the reality.
The reality is to win a district title and advance to play for a 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A state title like they have for decades and decades.
As we are now in Week 7 the priority is to get into the state playoffs and compete in the post-season, and for several schools, this is the week that things become real.
Fort Lauderdale Dillard (4-2, 1-0) at Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbon(3-2, 0-0) , 7. After six weeks of the season, both teams have been tested, and this evening’s matchup is by far the biggest game either team will play. Winner will most likely capture the district title – while the loser will have to scramble to get a state playoff spot in 3A.
Both talented and well coached teams will be the centerpiece contest on Thursday in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.
Class 3A statewide is very competitive, so gaining any home field advantage is essential.

Hialeah American (5-1, 0-0) at Miami Northwestern (4-2, 2-0), Traz, 7. This is a tale of two programs that are here for different reasons.
The Patriots have not enjoyed this kind of success in a long time, and so far this year, they have accomplished some things that haven’t happened around this campus in a long time. A win this season would not only give them a major edge to win a district title, but it would be a program-defining contest – for sure!
On the other side of the field is a program that has been to the state title game the past two years and have enjoyed national success. This by the Bulls’ standards has been a disappointing season – with losses to 1A Hawthorne and last week a humiliating setback against bitter rival Miami Central. But that all being said, a win this evening will give them another district title – and with a few tough games to close the regular season – some momentum.
