Teddy Bridgewater, Miami Northwestern Aim For The Playoffs In 2024

The big news last November in Liberty City was all about how their beloved Miami Northwestern Bulls were not in the state playoffs.

Football not being played at that time of year on 71st Street is not accepted. In fact, the longtime fans let their feelings be known that they were not pleased.

This is a proud program that when it comes to the football season, there is no choice. You win or you will hear the backlash.

Walk the halls of this school and you will see what football means. Memories of the hundreds of gifted football players who put this school on the map – nationally – can be felt with every step.

When the season came to an end, it was one of those students that stepped up and came to the rescue.

Teddy Bridgewater is not your normal athlete who is done well and forgot where he came from.

Since leaving for the University of Louisville, and NFL stops in Minnesota, Carolina, New Orleans, Miami and Detroit have always been about his hometown and those who make up this special community.

Whether it was making children and adults happy with gifts or giving his alma mater plenty of attention - in and out of the classroom - this native son has always returned.

Now, after the NFL season was completed, he has come back fulltime to help bring the Bulls back to where he left them when he headed to college.

Surrounded by tremendous coaches and a great support system, Bridgewater has hit the ground running and embraces the spring in a contagious way.

Teddy Bridgewater is the head coach of Miami Northwestern, and while he offers no promises of what’s ahead, he does guarantee discipline and hard work – year-round.

The off-season has been busy getting things ready for August when this team will travel to Coconut Creek to play in the Broward National Football Showcase.

This spring and summer will be about leaning on the rising seniors (2025) for talent and experience.

Among those prospects include Cameron Anderson (DB – 2.9 GPA), Lineten Belizaire (DB – 2.6 GPA), standout Antonio Branch Jr. (DB – 2.55 GPA), Devin Brown (DB – 2.8 GPA), nationally rated receiver Jade Card (3.1 GPA), impressive Tywan Cox (DB – 3.0 GPA), well respected King Davis (RB), Isaiah DeLoach (DE – 2.9 GPA), Zamir Frank (LB – 3.0 GPA), Twan Glover (WR – 2.9 GPA), Terrell Gordon Jr. (Athlete – 2.7 GPA), and experienced Samuel Griffin (LB – 2.5 GPA).

The 2025 class also features Omari Hollis (RB – 3-0 GPA), talented Daruis Johnson (WR – 3.2 GPA) and Lewon Lurry Jr. (DE – 2.5 GPA) – as well as C.J. Marquis (DE – 3.0 GPA), Calysis Parks (OL – 2.8 GPA), Jamari Pickett (DL – 2.8 GPA), Rafael Pineda (LB – 3.1 GPA), Ethan Rowe (OL – 2.5 GPA), nationally respected Ethan Silva (P/K – 3.0 GPA), Maci Warthen (DB – 3.0 GPA), and defensive lineman Deandre Wheeler (3.3 GPA)

HOW ABOUT THAT GIFTED UNDERCLASS TALENT

As impressive as the rising senior class will be, the Class of 2026 (rising juniors) could be as solid as anyone in south Florida.

With standouts like Jemel Bonica (DE – 2.5 GPA), J’Vari Flowers (DB – 3.3 GPA), Elijah Hardy (Athlete – 3.0 GPA), Desmond Johnson (LB – 3.0 GPA), Brandon Kinsey (Athlete), Florentino Lopez (QB – 2.5 GPA), Tarvail Mathis Jr. (RB – 2.5 GPA), Roderick McFadden (DL), Key’on Mena (OL), Leon Strawder (QB – 3.0 GPA) and national recruit Calvin Russell III (Athlete – 2.7 GPA), this train could keep rolling for a long time.

That 2026 group also features Demetrius Jones (OL/DL – 2.5 GPA), Nicsaint Joseph (WR – 2.8 GPA), Juelz Nelson (OL), Odonis Pierre (OL), Sean Singleton (RB), and receiver Kenyan Thompkins (2.5 GPA)

The rising sophomore class (2027) will also make a contribution with nationally regarded Nicholas Lennear (Athlete – 2.5 GPA) – as well as Jeaden Jackson (DB – 2.5 GPA), Jacob Smart (LB – 2.5 GPA), Jaylen Thanis (DL – 4.0 GPA), Remarcus Tunier (OL – 2.7 GPA), and lineman Jeremiah Young (2.5 GPA).

Third Annual Broward National Football Showcase Set For August 22-24

When plans were made for the first Broward National Football Showcase two years ago, the plans were to bring in programs from across the country to play Broward County teams.

The idea was to make it a showcase that would catch the eye of the country, who has always thrived on national matchups.

Throughout the years, it has been Florida schools who are often the road teams, and while the objective was to get the best matchups possible, having Broward County as the host was the reason that this was created.

With a successful opening year that brought in programs from California, Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, Washington D.C. And Pennsylvania, it set the table for the second year where the event attracted St. Frances Academy (Maryland), St. John Bosco (California), St. John’s Prep (Washington D.C.). Highlands (Virginia), Milton and Cedar Grove (Georgia) and Cardinal Gibbons (North Carolina) who all came to the event.

With Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas, Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, Plantation American Heritage, Davie Western, Coconut Creek Monarch, Miramar and Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons hosting, it was certainly three days that captured the attention of the football-starved country.

With ESPN once again involved and the event now recognized nationally, the 2024 schedule is the best yet.

With Dave & Busters, Hollywood, the Broward Education Foundation, Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital and Memorial Hospital among others, the 2024 roster of teams will be impressive and feature nationally ranked teams.

“It’s like a college bowl atmosphere,” said Co-Founder Dr. Kevin Perry. “The teams fly in, stay at the best hotels, attend area attractions such as the famous Jungle Queen and the Miami Marlins games, eat great food and are driven around south Florida.”

“When Shawn Cerra and I came up with the idea, it was made with bringing in the best teams for the seven games,” Dr. Perry added.

With the addition of a Florida school (Lake Mary) as well as Miami-Dade (Northwestern), this year’s showcase will be first class and will garner plenty of attention.

Here are the matchups:

THURSDAY, AUGUST 23 AT COCONUT CREEK HIGH

5 p.m. – Peachtree Ridge, Georgia (10-2) vs. Coconut Creek Monarch (11-3)

8 p.m. - Miami Northwestern (4-6) vs. Coconut Creek (10-3)

FRIDAY, AUGUST 23

7 p.m. - Lake Mary (10-2) at Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons (9-4).

7 p.m. - Plantation American Heritage (10-2) vs. Milton, Georgia (13-2, State Champion), St. Thomas Aquinas

SATURDAY, AUGUST 24

Hoover, Alabama (5-7) vs. Davie Western (9-4), 12 noon.

Las Vegas Bishop Gorman (12-0, State & National Champion) vs. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (14-1, State Champion), St. Thomas Aquinas, 4 p.m.

Bellflower St. John Bosco, California (11-2) vs. Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna (14-0, State Champion), St. Thomas Aquinas, 8 p.m.

Miami Edison Is Back For More This Coming Season

When it comes to competing and bringing everything they have each week, Miami Edison’s football program continues to be a thorn in the side of several south Florida programs.

With head coach Luther Campell ignores the players who leave his program for grass they believe is greener somewhere else and builds with prospects who want to be Red Raiders.

Winning four of the first five games in 2023, it was enough to push this team into the state playoffs once again – although they dropped a decision to Miami Central, there was a feeling that with a solid off-season, positive things can happen.

Spring football starts next week, and several newcomers will use the month to not only improve but get video to send off to colleges before the start of the 2024 season.

Here is a look at some of the rising seniors (class of 2025) who figure to lead this program:

Fort Lauderdale Dillard, Chaminade-Madonna Come Away As Battle 4 Broward 7 on 7 Champions

For the second time in as many years, some of the best high school 7-on-7 teams had the opportunity to showcase some elite talent.

With spring football getting started next week, 32 Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County teams headed to Cardinal Gibbons, Coral Glades and St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, playing some very competitive games.

On Sunday all the teams headed to St. Thomas Aquinas in search of the 754 and 954 titles – and when the dust settled, the Fort Lauderdale Panthers and the Chaminade-Madonna Lions came away with titles.

The event, which was hosted by the Broward County Officials Association was another first class and well-run production by Jeff Pratt and his amazing group of men and women.

DILLARD FOR THR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

Last season, in the first year of the event, the Dillard Panthers came away with the 754-team championship, and while they had a tough Saturday at Cardinal Gibbons, they more than made up for it on championship Sunday at St. Thomas Aquinas.

Dillard opened the second day with a 22-1 win over Miramar Everglades, staying alive with a matchup against Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy. After falling behind, 14-0, the Panthers reeled off 28 straight points and beat the Mavericks, 39-24, and moving into the semifinals.

The semifinal contest against Sunrise Piper saw them showcase plenty of talent in a 36-25 win and moved into the finals of the 754 Division.

The title game against Coconut Creek proved to be one of the most exciting in a contest that went back and forth.

In the end, it was the Panthers and head coach Demitris Mincey that came away with a 22-20 victory.

“The kids came to play on Sunday after a tough Saturday,” Mincey explained. “Now it’s time to get ready for spring.”

On Saturday, Dillard lost to Chaminade-Madonna, beat Boca Raton and Boca Raton Spanish River.

CHAMINADE-MADONNA STAYS STRONG TO WIN 954 CROWN

Coming into Sunday as the No. 3 seed in the 954 Division, head coach Dameon Jones and Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna went a perfect 5-0 and came away with a win against No. 1 seed Davie Western.

The talented Lions began the day with a 35-16 win against Lantana Santaluces, followed that up with a 29-15 victory over Wellington Palm Beach Central and moved into the semifinals.

In that semifinal contest against West Boca Raton, they came up big with a 29-15 decision and set up the No. 1 vs. No. 3 contest.

Chaminade-Madonna had beaten Dillard (29-7), Boca Raton Spanish River (31-6) and Coconut Creek (44-19) on Saturday.

Rising senior receiver Kyle Washington was dselected as MVP.

In addition to Dillard and Chaminade-Madonna, other programs who competed over the two days included Oakland Park Northeast, Delray Atlantic, Deerfield Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale Stranahan, Boca Raton Spanish River, Somerset Academy Key Charter, Coral Springs Coral Glades, Coconut Creek Monarch, Pembroke Pines West Broward, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas at South Plantation, Hollywood South Broward, Pembroke Pines Flanagan, Miami Norland, Pembroke Pines Charter, Hollywood Hills, Wellington, Miramar, Weston Cypress Bay and Miami Gardens Monsignor Pace.

Goleman Should Be Playoff Bound Again in 2024

There are two ways to look at the 2023 season for Miami Lakes Barbara Goleman’s football team.

While the year ended 5-6 with a four-game losing streak, the Gators and head coach Ariel Cribeiro did begin 5-2 and played well enough to reach the state playoffs.

With a first-round setback to 4M state champion Miami Christopher Columbus, this program headed into the off-season with a feeling that a solid spring and summer could give them enough momentum and another post season appearance.

If you have followed this program over the past five seasons, you know that while winning is important, it’s about the development, teaching and coaching that has kept impressive players at the school – while bringing in other difference makers.

With an eye on the Class of 2025 rising seniors, there is plenty to be excited about.

Here are some of those prospects who figure to make an impact:

Trevor Darling, DE, 6-2, 240.

As much as the rising senior class will be where the experience and leadership come from, there is simply no shortage of talent in the underclasses.
